Stereophoto cards
After developing the glass and film negatives, printing was done on albumen paper, later on silver gelatin paper. A black and white photo could be colored with colored pencils or pastel paint. To prevent curling, the print was stuck on a pre-printed piece of cardboard. That became the carte de visite.
Minder bekend was de snelfoto, the stickyback photo.
With stereo photo cards you could bring the world into your home: sights, landscapes and wildlife. The stereo photos became a teaching tool in education. You saw depth through a stereo viewer. As if you were walking around in the strange landscape yourself.
The photo studio sent prints on postcards for you home or, for example, to future clients, such as theater people who were looking for a new company.
You took a photo card with you as a souvenir from a trip and stuck it in an album. The largest Dutch publisher of “Photographies” was Andries Jager. While Merkelbach & Co. focused on stereo photo cards for the Dutch market.
